Instructions For Assembling Your New Marriage

Before assembling, you will need the following tools:

Adjustable patience wrench

Ballpeen compromiser

2 titanium mouth clamps

Needlenose humor pliers

Step 1-Unpack contents of Box A, character flaws and personal habits. Arrange flaws on flat surface with largest facing up. Place habits on flaws and gently twist clockwise until secure. Toothpaste cap & morning breath should be visible. Move to one side for later assembly.

Step 2-Unpack contents of Box B, in-laws and holidays. Arrange in-laws on flat surface. Quirks & baggage should be visible. Insert in-law A into holiday A, in-law B into holiday B and so on until all in-laws are secure.

Step 3-Carefully remove money talks from small plastic pouch. Attach each talk to personal habit/character flaw assembly using adjustable patience wrench. Gently tap talk w/ballpeen compromiser until income/expense arrows are aligned. Repeat Step 3 as needed.

Step 4-Unpack contents of Box C, children and pets. Carefully attach pets 1 & 2 to left side of income/expense assembly with adjustable patience wrench. When firmly secured, attach child 1 to right side of assembly. Titanium mouth clamps may be used for colicky child. Repeat Step 4, using needlenose humor pliers as needed.

Step 5-Check that all parts are securely fastened. You are now ready to enjoy your new marriage!

The great Levon Helm died yesterday after a long battle with cancer. We were fortunate to have him in this world as long as we did, but I sure wish he could have lived forever. I heard him live many times over the years, from the Fillmore in ‘69 to the Ramble in 2011, and he played every minute of every gig with a joyful intensity. This is from a 2010 Ramble I went to with my son John. Phil Lesh and Donald Fagen among others are sitting in.

Went to hear veteran singer-songwriter Chris Smither at the Flying Monkey last night. Excellent show. Fleet-fingered guitar picker w/a wry sense of humor and a deep catalog of songs. No drummer, but he miked his feet & that worked just fine.

Saw this ‘75 Coupe de Ville the other day. I remember hitchhiking from Boston to NYC with Eddie Rawlings, a buddy of mine back in the seventies and getting picked up by a guy driving one of these “land yachts.” It was a cold, late October day and we’d been outside for awhile. The car was warm, and sinking into the fat, red leather seat in the back, we felt like we’d arrived in heaven. And what a smooth ride that car had, like a living room on wheels. Unfortunately, one of the tires blew out somewhere on the Mass Pike…maybe around Worcester. The guy had AAA so we put our thumbs out and continued on. I don’t remember the rest of the trip.

Cadillacs figure into a lot of songs. Maybe I’ll add to the canon…
